We all know that plastic and being more eco-friendly has been a hot topic in recent years and we should all do our bit where we can in reducing it and cutting out the need for single-use plastics. Instead of eliminating and throwing out plastic we should reuse what we have and ensure we do our best to get the most out of it. Here at Babymoov we are striving to make things greener for future generations. Our newest product our Lovenest Natural Care is made with organic cotton and we have moved production to Portugal which has dramatically reduced our carbon footprint on transporting these. Below we have listed some tips in ways to be more eco-friendly at home.
Choose Glass
Instead of plastic choose a glass alternative where you can. Save empty jars of jam, mayo or what you have in your home and reuse and repurpose these to store foods such as pasta and rice. Our Glass Babybols are perfect for storing your homemade purees and leftovers and can be reheated and popped in the freezer.
Switch to Eco Sanitary Ware
After having a baby it can take a little while for our bodies to get back into a new rhythm. This is a good time to think about switching to a better eco-friendly version of pads or cups that dramatically cut down on single-use plastics and are so much better for the environment.
Be a Cloth Bum
We all know that babies get through a dramatic amount of nappies in their first year or so, the average baby will use around 4,500 nappies before they are potty trained and about 7 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK!* Nappies don’t biodegrade for a very long time so switching to a greener eco-friendly alternative such as Kit&Kin is a great way to help the environment. But if you want to make a big difference switching to reusable cloth nappies will make a huge impact. You can pick these up at places such as Asda with brands like Bambino Mio and there are plenty on the market like TotsBots. If you want to go that step even further check out your local Cloth Nappy Library where you can rent these reusable nappies in the size stage you need at the time.
Cook from Scratch
Baby food can be incredibly expensive to buy. With single-use pouches of purees that are not recyclable and lids that are completely made of plastic, they’re not great for the environment or your purse. Cooking from scratch is a fantastic way to get all those important nutrients into your baby and child when weaning and will save you a lot of money by making these at home. Our Nutribaby+ has been designed alongside parents and experts to save you time in the kitchen. Easy to use and quick to cook it can steam, blend, blitz, defrost and reheat as well as sterilise all meals in a matter of minutes. Use our Foodii Complete Kit also allows you to fill your own pouches which you can fill and reuse endless times.
Host an Eco Party
We all love celebrating our children’s milestones, whether it’s a Christening, a Naming Celebration, birthdays or Christmas parties a great way to cut down on that disposable plastic cutlery and plates is to use a Eco-Party site where you can pick a theme and rent all you need for your part. As well as this if you give gifts opt for paper bags and natural materials such as wood and cardboard. Bamboo cutlery is also fantastic for an alternative to those plastic knives and forks.
Wooden Open-Ended Toys
Children love toys it’s a fact. As they grow their interests change and so a great way to make greener choices is to opt for wooden toys and those that are open-ended. This means that the toy grows with them and can be imagined in play as a whole variety of things rather than being specific and therefore informing them it should only be played in one way. Wooden Peg Dolls, Grimm’s Stacking Rainbow, wooden building blocks and these sorts of toys are simply wonderful. Check out Kidly for lots of inspiration and ideas.
Toy Rotation
Children can become bored with the same toys fast and a great way to keep things fresh and avoid the temptation to order something shiny and new is to do a toy rotation. Instead of having a basket crammed to the brim with toys that will more than likely result in them tipping everything out and not focussing in on one toy, instead, keep out a selection of toys for example on a low shelf or bookshelf and the rest store away in the cupboard. Each week switch the toys up and this will keep them fresh and interesting to your child. Check out @the.hidden.gem for lots of inspiration on YouTube.
Shop Second Hand
Second-hand doesn’t mean second best. We all know just how fast children grow out of their clothes and toys and a great way to save money and help the environment is to shop second hand online, in charity shops and to see what friends may be looking to get rid of.
Use Your Library
Children love listening and reading stories and these can be expensive to buy brand new. As well as that some covers can be lined with a plastic coating and glitter that aren’t great for the environment. Instead of buying new a great and free resource is to use your local library. Search through age-appropriate books for your children as well as downloadable stories which you can enjoy in the car. Much like a toy rotation, a book rotation is a fun activity to choose new books for a few weeks before switching them up for something new.
